Magiqueando con Daniel Chan

This is a special interview because it is the first one that is going to

be published in English. Our guest is an international magician

that has been working for a wide range of companies such as

Apple, Google, Yahoo,  Ebay and apart from that, he has won

several awards. Today, he will share his experience, I am sure

all of us will learn a lot from him.

Good Morning, Dan

Firstly, I would like to say thank you for being here, sharing

your magic with our readers

My first question is related to the way you were touched by magic,

Could you tell us something about it?

I was absolutely touched when a magician by the name of Gerald

Joseph shared with me the secret ring flight after his show. I was

absolutely stunned that he'd share with me such a fabulous secret.

In which kind of magic do you feel more confortable: close-up,

stage or parlor magic?

Close-up as I have so much more material to choose from.

Also, you have so many more opportunities to perform close-up.

Do you consider it is more difficult nowadays to find quality in

magic?

Yes, there's too much out there. My standard are a lot higher as

I've matured.

You usually use technology to transmit a magical experience,

do you believe it is more easier to have a major impact using

them?

As you know most magicians have pivoted to Zoom so there

are certain things that won't play as well. But there are many

more opportunities.

What tips do you recommend to our readers if they want to

get into technological magic?

Definitively join the online Facebook group for Zoom magicians.

Do you follow a method when you are practicing or while you are

preparing a show?

Every stage effect should have an equivalent close-up effect,

at least in presentation. It'll help you flush out ideas. For example,

if you're going to perform a head chopper on stage, do a finger

chopper first. Allow yourself to experiment and fail in smaller less

consequential spaces.

I have two questions that maybe can be interesting to go into

further details. You have been travelling around the world since

you start, so I think you have a vast knowledge to clarify the

styles in magic, Have you found differences between countries

regarding magicians and even the way the audience react

when they see magic?

I've performed in Japan 4 times. The Japanese people are so

appreciative of performers. When I was performing there

I would always hear the word "sugoi".

Later when I looked up the meaning of the word,

I found out that it meant "awesome"

Due to the circumstances we are living these days, you have

created virtual events, Was it complex  to take that step? What

are the effects that have better reactions? Should magicians

adapt their shows to these new platforms (zoom…)?

Early in my career, I started as a street performer. So I

approached performing on Zoom in the same way with little

expectation and just to give a gift.

Without a clear vision no, Zoom is not for everyone. Just like

television is not for everyone. I've seen way too many poorly

executed shows.

Have you developed three online packages, Could you describe them?

MED Talks: Magic, Entertainment, and Deception

Would you like to learn tricks that'll leave your audience open-

mouthed in amazement?  For those who are looking to not only

experience the magic, but are interested in learning more about how

effects are accomplished, you’ll discover an introduction to magic

and mentalism with Dan’s MED Talks: Magic, Entertainment, and

Deception.  You and your guests will learn how to use the art of

illusion and psychological-based techniques to amaze your family,

friends or work colleagues. In fact, you may even learn a technique

on how a trick is done, then get fooled again as Dan demonstrates a

different effect utilizing the same technique!  With Dan’s MED

Talks, you’ll get a backstage VIP pass on how magic’s best

close up effects are performed.

The Virtual Chan Family Show -

Are your employees Zoomed out? Does your staff spend more time

at work than they do with their family? If so, let your team learn

more about each other and spend quality time with their family

while Dan introduces his family to yours! This one of a kind

family show features Dan and his kids, James and Grace,

who will perform some of their signature effects including

3, 4, and 5 ball juggling and amazing math stunts! James and

Grace were also recently featured in a segment for Kids Say

the Darndest Things on ABC.

“Magic of the Mind” -

Magic of the Mind is a unique show that interweaves highly

developed feats of telepathy and mind reading.  Using a combination

of misdirection, theatrical trickery, and keen observation, Dan will

reveal your innermost thoughts, the name you are considering

for your unborn child, your phone or ATM passcode, and other

secrets nobody else could know.  He will even perform a signature

effect that reveals a prediction not only on your own cell phone,

but on every phone in the audience.  Dan’s aim is to provide a

sophisticated and thought-provoking show that will captivate

even the most skeptical audience.

Is it true that many members of your family are magicians?  I have

seen your son doing incredible tricks, you are proud of him, are

you?

Yes, my son James is doing some amazing magic and was featured

on national television performing a major illusion. I wanted to thank

Gay Blackstone for her support in helping us with this major

milestone. My son also juggles 5 balls, 3 flaming torches and even

picks-pockets so I'm extremely proud of him.

At the beginning I mentioned some famous companies in which

you have been hired. What do they expect from a magician,

do they want something in particular?

My client list is an A to Z of major corporations: Airbnb, Apple,

Bank of America, BitTorrent, Buzzfeed, Charles Schwab,

Chevron, Cloudflare, CISCO, Deloitte, EA, eBay, Facebook,

Falconstor, Golden State Warriors, Google, HP, Intel, Kaiser

Permanente, Kleiner Perkins, LinkedIn, Marriott, Merrill Lynch,

Netflix, Oracle, Paramount Pictures, PayPal, Quora,

Radio Disney, Ritz Carlton, Sequoia Capital, SF Giants,

Sony Play Station, Twitter, USCG, VISA, Wells Fargo, Yahoo,

and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

My brand promises it to deliver sophisticated magic for intelligent

audiences. That really resonates with tech companies.

Thanks a lot for your kindness, answering the questions,

sharing your experience not only about magic but also about

the usage of technology, platforms and how to adapt our magic

in these times. Would you like to add anything else?
